    I visited my bee yard today and the bees were flying.I have +12" of snow,temp of 50f and the bees were flying for the first time in 2009.Ahh, what a cleansing flight will do for the bees right now.Nothing like a quick stop at the local BP station!I like to see them fly a least once a month.I live in the SE corner of Cuyahoga county.

    I have now visited all of my beeyards and of the 11 hives going into winter, I have only 2 dead.I also ordered some new packages and some new queens.The live hives are strong, therefor I am hopeful of their survival.

    I took a day vacation today to check my beeyards and to put on pollen patties.I have very active and happy bees, 9 colonies of them, still going strong.See everyone in Wooster on Saturday,March 7th.

    On this day I was in Wooster for the Tri-County bee seminar( I have not missed this event since becoming a beekeeper).When I left Wooster the temperature was 70 degrees so I knew my girls would be flying and sure enough when I got home a little after 5pm, the girls were haulin' pollen.The maples around my house and along the driveway were blooming!What a great sight.

    I took time to add another pollen patty and to feed sugar syrup.The bees are eating it up...and thriving.Good thing I did this cause hives were getting light on stores and because it snowed on 04/06/09 and 04/07/09.Imagine that...snow in April in NE Ohio!

    I made my first split for this season...and a very good one.My queen will be in on Monday for this split.I also have three packages coming Monday.Weather is great..low 80's and dry..WOW.Looking forward to and loving this bee season.

    I installed three packages and requeened seven hives, a successful day overall.Weather was sunny and in the 60's.Bee season has surely begun.

     05/21/09

    Today I made two more splits from the same mother hive as the first split I made on 04/25/09.This time however, I had queen cells with them.I am looking forward to hatching these queens and watching them take over in their respective hives.Temp was 83 this evening.The mother hive has an almost full super of honey plus two supers that the bees are working on.I love this time of year.

    I opened the two splits that I made on 05/21/09 and found a new queen in each of them.They looked very healthy, but are not laying eggs yet.I'll check in again in about a week to see what's happening.I moved an established hive as well as the first split back to the mother yard on 05/24/09.Thanks Richard.

    I have been feeding my splits for quite awhile now.You may need to check your colonies for food stores, if light,feed,feed and then feed.Golden rod is blooming but we never know for sure if it will make enough honey.

    I noticed that the girls were beginning to drag out the droan pupae, this means that winter is coming soon.If you haven't treated yet or checked for winter stores of honey or sugar syrup, better get'er done now, time is not on the beekeepers side at this stage.

     I went out and checked my hives for survivors and found that all 13 hives are alive at this point.Hopefully we will have a good spring and actually produce a bumper crop of honey this year.I will be feeding pollen patties soon,probably in February.All for now.

      I just went out and put pollen patties on all 13 hives.I have 2 weak hives but I'll cross my fingers that they will survive.Some of the hives were getting light on stores so made it in time.Temp mid 40's and the bees are taking cleansing flights.It feels good to have gotten my first sting for 2010(not bad for opening 13 hives)All for now.
